Colorado Springs is served by many state highways, including State Highway 21 on the east side. This major semi-expressway extends from Black Forest to Fountain. The city is also served by State Highway 83, which runs from the city to northern Cheyenne County. In addition, US 24 connects the city to the eastern suburb of Woodland Park.
A short drive from Colorado Springs is Pikes Peak, the city’s most notable natural landmark. Standing 14,115 feet, it is the highest mountain on the Front Range. The mountain inspired Katharine Lee Bates’ song, “America the Beautiful.” Bates had written the song originally as a poem titled “Pikes Peak.” The Pikes Peak area also boasts the world’s tallest cog railway.
