So, in this blog post, we’ll answer that very important question of yours: why is my air conditioner not cooling my home? We’ll talk about some of the most common reasons why air conditioners suddenly stop working. Then, we’ll tell you how you can get your air conditioner inspected and diagnosed by an HVAC professional for free!
First, how do air conditioners work?
In a nutshell, your air conditioner is made up of three main components: the compressor, the condenser coil, and the evaporator coil. These three components work together to circulate a chemical called “refrigerant.” Your air conditioner evaporates the refrigerant into a chilled gas, and a fan then blows the chilled gas and circulates it throughout your home or office. While that may sound simple enough, the components of your air conditioner are extremely intricate. If one thing breaks down, the entire unit can go down.
So then, why is my air conditioner not cooling my home?
It could be caused by a few different problems. Let’s break it down:
Dirty air filter. Why is my air conditioner not cooling my home if it was working just fine the other day? If your unit suddenly broke down without warning, then your air filter could be the culprit! If your air filter is dirty and clogged, then your air conditioner won’t be able to circulate air properly. In more extreme cases, a dirty air filter can even cause your unit to shut down all together.
A frozen evaporator coil. Why is my air conditioner not cooling my home if my air filters aren’t dirty? Another common reason is a frozen evaporator coil. Signs of a frozen evaporator coil include higher utility bills, frost forming on the copper refrigerant tubing, and excessive condensate drainage near your indoor unit.
Refrigerant leak. What if it’s neither of those? Why is my air conditioner not cooling my home if my air filters and evaporator coil are both fine? Check your refrigerant! If your refrigerant is leaking, then your unit won’t be able to chill the air coming into the unit.
